Introduction to Langtang Helicopter Tour
Situated very close to Kathmandu, it still takes a day to reach Langtang Valley by road. Flying in by helicopter is much faster and a fantastic way to see a new location from above.
The area is home to Tamangs and Sherpas and therefore has a Buddhist culture, as you will discover at Kyanjin Gompa monastery. There is time to explore the monastery and meet some of the monks.
Some of the majestic mountains you will see are Langtang Lirung (7,234m /23,733 ft), Langtang Ri (7,205m /23,638 ft), and Dorje Lakpa (6,966m / 22,854 ft), among many more.

The helicopter tour leaves Kathmandu in the morning and takes around 30 minutes to reach Langtang Valley. The valley is surrounded by the mountains in the Langtang range, such as Langtang itself, Langtang Ri, Dorje Lakpa, and many more, some of which are over 7,000m /22,965 ft high.
You get fantastic views of these mountains and the landscape from the helicopter. Langtang Valley used to have a thriving town that was destroyed by the 2015 earthquake. It is slowly coming back to life as the locals rebuild.
The flight also stops at Kyanjin Gompa, a Buddhist monastery. Most of the inhabitants of this region are Tamangs and Sherpas who practice Buddhism, and there is plenty of evidence of this, from small gompas (shrines) to fluttering prayer flags. There are two choices for helicopter tours: reserve the whole helicopter or just a seat on a group flight. The basic costs are given here, but seasonal prices may differ. The group flight price depends on the number of passengers. Please, ask us before making the booking for the group flight.
• It costs USD 1500 to charter the whole flight.
• It costs USD 350 per person on a group flight
Although the Langtang Helicopter Tour is short and does not involve trekking, permits are still mandatory because the helicopter lands within the protected area of Langtang National Park. The Nepalese government enforces this to help preserve the natural and cultural heritage of the park, even for air-based visits.

A helicopter tour to Langtang is all about the views, majestic peaks, sweeping valleys, and the feeling of flying straight into the heart of the Himalayas. To truly capture that magic, timing is everything.
Spring (March to May): When Nature Awakens
Spring is one of the most magical times to soar over Langtang. As winter melts away, the hills burst into color with blooming rhododendrons and wildflowers. The weather is pleasantly cool, and skies are typically clear and calm, making it ideal for helicopter flights. From the sky, you’ll see a perfect contrast of snow-capped peaks and green alpine terrain.
- Why Go: Stable flying conditions, vibrant landscapes, and soft morning light
- Pro Tip: Book an early morning flight to catch golden light on Langtang Lirung
Autumn (Mid-September to November): The Himalayan Showcase
Autumn is hands-down the most popular season for a Langtang Helicopter Tour. The monsoon has washed the air clean, revealing razor-sharp views of the mountains. The days are dry and crisp, perfect for smooth flights and crystal-clear photography.
- Why Go: Peak visibility, dramatic lighting, and crisp air
- Pro Tip: Bring your best camera—views are often jaw-dropping
Winter (December to February): Quiet, Cold, and Spectacular
If you’re a fan of snowy peaks and peaceful skies, winter is your hidden gem. The Langtang range is blanketed in fresh snow, and the crowds are minimal. However, temperatures at Kyanjin Gompa can be freezing, and early morning fog may cause flight delays.
- Why Go: Snow-draped peaks and tranquil Himalayan silence
- Caution: Dress warmly and stay flexible with timing
Monsoon (June to Early September): A No-Fly Zone
While the Langtang Valley is lush during the monsoon, helicopter flights are not recommended. Heavy rain, cloud cover, and fog often lead to poor visibility and frequent cancellations.
- Why Skip: Unsafe flying conditions, obscured views, and unpredictable delays
Physical Effort: Minimal
- This tour is designed for all fitness levels and does not involve any trekking.
- After landing at Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 meters), you’ll have around 30 minutes to walk around the village area, enjoy the views, or sip a cup of tea.
- The terrain is flat and walkable, making it suitable for families, seniors, and non-hikers.
Altitude Awareness: Moderate
- While the time at high altitude is brief, you will land at nearly 3,900 meters, which can cause mild symptoms of altitude exposure, such as:
- Light headache
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness or slight fatigue
- These symptoms are typically temporary and subside upon descending. However, we recommend:
- Drinking plenty of water before the flight
- Avoiding alcohol and caffeine the night before
- Dressing warmly, as temperatures at Kyanjin can be chilly, even in summer
If you have any heart, respiratory, or high-altitude concerns, consult your doctor before booking.
