Introduction to The Sereng Gompa Manaslu Circuit Trek

The Sereng Gompa – Manaslu Circuit Trek is an enriching extension of the classic Manaslu Circuit, offering trekkers a chance to experience the serene beauty and spiritual atmosphere of Sereng Gompa (also spelled Serang or Shyala Gompa). This peaceful monastery is nestled in a hidden valley at the base of the towering Himalayas, providing an intimate glimpse into the life of Tibetan Buddhist monks and the unique culture of the Nubri region.

Combining the Manaslu Circuit with this off-the-beaten-path side trip gives you a deeper perspective of the region’s cultural and natural diversity. You’ll trek through lush forests, ancient villages, suspension bridges, and high alpine meadows while enjoying spectacular views of Manaslu, Himalchuli, Ngadi Chuli, and Ganesh Himal.

The Sereng Gompa Manaslu Circuit Trek is one of the most beautiful and special adventures you can do in Nepal. It takes you on a long walk around the giant Manaslu mountain — the eighth highest mountain in the world! Along the way, you also visit a peaceful old monastery called Sereng Gompa, which sits high above a quiet valley.

If you have already walked the famous Annapurna Circuit or Everest Base Camp trails, this trek is a great new adventure. The whole trip usually takes about 15 days. It starts in a small village called Macha Khola and finishes at Beshi Sahar. One part of the trail leads you up to the calm Sereng Gompa monastery, where you can learn about the local Buddhist culture.

Manaslu is surrounded by other big mountain ranges — the Annapurnas to the west and the Ganesh Himal to the east. These huge mountains make you feel tiny, but the views are truly amazing! Unlike the busy Everest and Annapurna trails, the Manaslu trek is much quieter. The path is wild and sometimes hard, but it is full of beautiful scenery, kind people, and a peaceful feeling, especially near the monastery.

On this trek, you start in warm, green hills with rice and millet fields. You follow the strong Budi Gandaki River, which has bright blue water and waterfalls pouring down the cliffs. There are many long suspension bridges that swing high above the river — they look scary but are lots of fun to cross! Sometimes, in the rainy season, small bridges wash away, and trekkers have to hop over wet rocks instead.

This trek only opened to visitors in 1992, so it still feels like a real adventure. The Sereng Gompa side trip makes it feel even more magical, giving you a taste of old Himalayan life — quiet, simple, and full of surprises.

As you walk higher and higher, you reach the snowy Larkya La Pass near the border of Tibet. This is the highest point of the trek at 5,167 meters (16,952 feet)! It is often cold and icy here, so people use tiny spikes called micro crampons to walk safely. To cross the pass, trekkers wake up super early — around 4 in the morning — to reach the top before the strong winds start.

From the top of the pass, you can look back at the path you climbed and feel proud. But the best part is looking forward! You see a giant wall of snowy mountains and glaciers shining in the sun. Big peaks like Cheo Himal, Himlung Himal, and Annapurna II stand tall and strong. It is one of the most beautiful views in the whole Himalayas!

The Sereng Gompa Manaslu Circuit Trek is an adventure for people who love mountains, nature, and learning about other cultures. It is quiet, beautiful, and feels like stepping back in time. If you want to do a trek that is special and peaceful — with huge mountains and a holy monastery — this trek will give you memories you will never forget!
