After breakfast at Rongbuk Monastery, we set out for an exhilarating day as we make our way towards Gyatchu La Pass, the highest point of the trip at an impressive 5,220 meters above sea level. By now, you will be well acclimatized to the thin, high-altitude air, making the ascent to the pass more manageable. From the pass, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks and vast Tibetan Plateau.

As you cross the Gyatchu La Pass, you might find it interesting to note that the road to Mount Kailash branches off to the west, leading towards one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in Tibet. However, we continue heading towards Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city, where we will spend the night.

The journey to Shigatse offers an opportunity to take in more of Tibet’s rugged and remote beauty, with the drive winding through Tibetan villages, mountain valleys, and open plateaus. Upon arrival in Shigatse, you’ll check into your hotel for a comfortable night’s rest.

After breakfast in Shigatse, we will begin the day by visiting the historic Tashilhunpo Monastery, the seat of the Panchen Lama. Founded in 1447 by the first Dalai Lama, this monastery holds great significance in Tibetan Buddhism. The Panchen Lama is considered the second most important figure in Tibetan Buddhism, after the Dalai Lama. The current Panchen Lama, however, disappeared in 1995, at the age of six, under mysterious circumstances, and is assumed to have been kidnapped by the Chinese authorities. After the monastery visit, we will continue our journey towards Lhasa, passing through two significant mountain passes: Karo La Pass and Kambu La Pass.
