Day 1: Kathmandu to Paro (Flight) and Drive to Thimphu

The flight from Kathmandu to Paro is one of the most dramatic one-hour rides in aviation. Snow peaks press up on both sides of the aircraft, and as the plane banks into the Paro Valley, Chomolhari’s white pyramid fills the window. We’ll have your boarding documents sorted well in advance — Bhutan requires a Tourism Council permit code before the airline issues your ticket, so there’s nothing to chase on the morning. Just show up, and we’ll take care of the rest.
Your guide and driver meet you at arrivals. The road to Thimphu follows the Pa Chhu River east through a valley so clean and quiet it takes a moment to register. On the way, we stop at Tamchog Lhakhang — a 15th-century temple across a swaying iron chain bridge — and at Chuzom, where two rivers meet and three stupas mark the confluence in Nepali, Tibetan, and Bhutanese styles. It’s a 65 km drive, about 1.5 hours, and it earns its place in the itinerary.
Thimphu arrives gently. No traffic lights, no billboards, carved wooden facades on every building including the banks. The capital sits at 2,334 m / 7657 ft , so take the afternoon slow — a walk through the weekend market or up to the giant Buddha Dordenma statue above town is the right speed. Tonight we stay in Thimphu and let the altitude settle in quietly before the days ahead.
Thimpu
Thimphu is different from any capital city you’ll visit. You won’t find traffic lights here – instead, a white-gloved police officer directs traffic at the main intersection. The government chose this approach because a roundabout fits better with Bhutanese culture than modern signals. The city sits at 2,334 meters / 7657 feet above sea level, so take your time on that first afternoon walk as the thin mountain air takes some getting used to. Every building follows traditional architecture rules, which means banks, shops, and monasteries all share the same beautiful carved wooden details and white walls. This creates a unique feeling where the entire city looks like one piece of amazing craftsmanship. Visit the impressive Tashichho Dzong at the northern part of town – this fortress-monastery serves as both a religious site and houses the King’s offices and our national government. Make sure to explore the weekend market, look up at the massive 51-meter Buddha Dordenma statue watching over our valley, and try some hot local food. Thimphu gives you the best experience when you slow down and really take time to notice the details rather than rushing from one sight to another.Day 2: Morning Drive to Paro and Hike Tiger’s Nest (Takstang)

We leave Thimphu early and drive 65 km (40 miles) back to Paro. The valley is still in shadow and the air is cold. A good start to the long day ahead. Paro valley opens up as the sun clears the ridge and by the time we reach the trailhead at Ramthangkha, the light is already warm on the cliffs above.
The hike to Taktsang — Tiger’s Nest — is 900 m (2,953 ft) up through blue pine and rhododendron forest. The smell of resin and damp earth is underfoot the whole way up. The monastery appears in stages: first a glimpse through the trees, then a full reveal from the viewpoint that stops every first-timer in their tracks. It clings to a sheer granite cliff at 3,120 m (10,236 ft), four temple buildings stacked above a 300 m (984 ft) drop, connected by a waterfall and a steep stone staircase. The round trip is about 10 km (6.2 miles). It’s harder than it looks from the valley floor and worth every step.
We descend in the afternoon, legs tired in the best way and take lunch in Paro town before heading back to the hotel. Tiger’s Nest is the image most people take home from Bhutan — and standing in front of it, you’ll understand exactly why. Some places live up to their reputation. This is one of them.
Paro
Nestled at 2,200 meters (7,218 feet), Paro spreads across a beautiful flat valley where the crystal-clear Pa Chhu River flows gently through vibrant fields of rice and buckwheat. This charming town feels wonderfully manageable with its single main street lined with traditional painted wooden shop-fronts, yet it’s home to some of Bhutan’s most treasured landmarks that you’ll absolutely want to experience. The magnificent Paro Dzong, that stunning whitewashed fortress rising above the river, has been watching over this valley since the 17th century – it’s truly a sight that takes your breath away. Just above it, you’ll find the National Museum, where centuries of fascinating Bhutanese history come alive through beautiful thangkas, ancient armor, and intricate bronze artifacts. And then there’s the legendary Tiger’s Nest, perched dramatically on its cliff face at 3,120 meters (10,236 feet), creating an almost mystical backdrop that you can see from nearly anywhere in the valley on a clear day. Most travelers begin their Bhutan adventure right here through the country’s only international airport, and honestly, Paro makes the perfect starting point – the altitude won’t overwhelm you, the pace lets you settle in comfortably, and this magical valley immediately lets you know you’ve arrived somewhere truly special.
